Can of Gold By Marcel Wanders
The prelude to Soup Kitchen was a design project called Can of Gold.
The brainchild of Marcel Wanders (Dutch designer with a vision),
Can of Gold used the simple idea of gilding Campbell’s soup cans
in 24-carat gold to raise money for local homeless charities (it
had successfully run in Hamburg, Washington and Sydney). Annabel
was working on Can of Gold in London in conjunction with furniture
retailer Noel Hennessy Furniture. At the time, Thomasina was working
around the corner at Villandry. Annabel approached Villandry to
support Can of Gold. She and Tommi met and hit it off and Annabel
made the mistake of mentioning a soup book idea.
A huge thank you is due to all those involved in supporting Can of Gold in
London including: Martha Greene at Villandry, Swarovski, The Royal
Netherlands Embassy, Philip Treacy, Paul Smith and Sophie Mill,
No. 5 Maddox St, Ripping Image, Gilly Booth, Nick Bonham and of
course, the genius Marcel Wanders and bow-tied Noel Hennessy.
