The Salvation Army is a Christian church and charity and the largest, most
diverse provider of social services after the Government. Around 200,000
people every week have contact with The Salvation Army, through 750 local
church and community centres which hold weekly acts of worship as well as
activities including youth clubs, parent and toddler groups, luncheon clubs
and advice for people in need. The Salvation Army also runs over 85
residential centres for homeless people, the elderly, families, and people
with drug and alcohol addictions, and an international Family Tracing
Service. The Salvation Army is funded by donations from the public and where
appropriate, Government grants. The Salvation Army has over 50,000 members
and volunteers, 4,000 employees and 1,500 ministers known as officers. You
do not need to wear uniform to be a member of The Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army was founded in East London in 1865 by Methodist
Minister William Booth and quickly grew into a world-wide church
with over 1 million members. The Salvation Army is now present in
109 countries with over 15,000 churches and running projects as
diverse as hospitals, schools, micro–credit programmes and
residential centres for homeless people, the elderly, families and
young people and people with addictions.
