The Salvation Army is a Christian church and charity and the largest, most diverse provider of social services after the Government. Around 200,000 people every week have contact with The Salvation Army, through 750 local church and community centres which hold weekly acts of worship as well as activities including youth clubs, parent and toddler groups, luncheon clubs and advice for people in need. The Salvation Army also runs over 85 residential centres for homeless people, the elderly, families, and people with drug and alcohol addictions, and an international Family Tracing Service. The Salvation Army is funded by donations from the public and where appropriate, Government grants. The Salvation Army has over 50,000 members and volunteers, 4,000 employees and 1,500 ministers known as officers. You do not need to wear uniform to be a member of The Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army was founded in East London in 1865 by Methodist Minister William Booth and quickly grew into a world-wide church with over 1 million members. The Salvation Army is now present in 109 countries with over 15,000 churches and running projects as diverse as hospitals, schools, micro–credit programmes and residential centres for homeless people, the elderly, families and young people and people with addictions.
